Headteacher update letter 29.01.21

Dear Parents/Carers,

Headteacher update

I hope you and your family are keeping safe at this time. We continue to do all we can, here at St Mary’s to support you with your child’s learning. If your child has remote access, they will have seen their lessons recorded. TAs and teachers are also calling children several times over a week. If your child is accessing Microsoft Teams they are invited to join their class teacher and class, alongside a member of the senior leadership team for a class live meeting. It has been lovely to see the children who have attended these meetings. We know routines have changed in the home for many families. The attendance at some of these live meetings could be improved. This once-a-week session gives your child an opportunity to see their classmates and talk with their teacher. Please encourage your child to join the class live team meeting with the teacher.

Learning Workpacks

There are some parents/carers, collecting work packs for their children from the school office. This has been for children who are not accessing remotely. As from Monday we will have a box in reception for parents/carers to return work packs. Please note that the packs must be labelled with the child’s name and class. They will be quarantined for 72 hours before teachers can access them to check over your child’s work. You should expect that if there are any queries about a child’s work -the teacher or TA will contact you by phone. It is important to us that your child completes their work to the best of their ability and returns their work or submit it whenever possible by taking a photograph.

I have not yet had a chance to chat with as many parents as I would wish to and so I am offering two online meetings for parent on two evenings in the last week of this half term. I have also invited up to two governors to join each meeting.

The meetings will be via ZOOM and will take place on the following dates:

Tuesday 9th February 7.30pm-8pm (Meeting 1) and

Thursday 11th February 7.30-8pm (Meeting 2)

The agenda for the meeting will be based on your views about the learning provision we have provided to support your child and I will also be seeking your views about issues that are important to you regarding our school and your child’s education . I would like to set up these meetings at least once monthly to hear your views as parents/carers. I am committed to working in partnership with you. Please contact the school via phone or via the school email stating your child’s name and which meeting you would like to attend. We will then send out the meeting link via text message and email for you to join. I look forward to hearing your views.

There is some good news, the Prime Minister announced that possibly after March 8th schools may re-open. What is useful this time, is that we will all be given at least two week’s notice to prepare for the children’s return. This has not happened previously.

Some further good news, we have had our allocation of devices from the government. They have arrived in school and so we are preparing the devices to be distributed to the children on our list. Additionally, we also applied for some BT Wi-Fi vouchers and will be contacting families who have informed us that they do not currently have access to Wi-Fi to support their child’s use of a device. The use of the Wi-Fi vouchers will depend upon your postcode and whether you are living in a BT Hotspot.

We now have a social media presence of Facebook. At the moment, the focus is on sharing information to support during lockdown with home learning and services to support families. We will begin to send notices via the page alongside our other communication systems. The page is also open to being accessed in your home language and can be translated via Facebook. Please like and share our page with other parents in our school community. The address to search for on Facebook is @StMPriSouthampton.

At the end of this half term, we will sadly say farewell to a long-standing member of our staff team, Mrs Rathore (Early years Phase leader and SENCO). Many of you will have had contact with Mrs Rathore over the fourteen years she has worked here at St Mary’s. She will be hugely missed as a popular and experienced member of our team. We wish her well and continue success on her journey as she moves to another Southampton school.

If your child is on the register to attend school during this partial closure and anyone in the household has Covid symptoms, please DO NOT send your child into school.  Please contact us and let us know.

Thank you for all you are doing to support us with your child’s learning. Remember to establish a clear routine with your child. Take some ‘brain breaks’ and get plenty of fresh air with your child/children. I am making contact with a random selection of parents by phone to say hello and checking in regarding how your child is coping with their learning at this time. If you have any queries/ concerns please let us know.

Yours sincerely,

Miss S Miller
