Uniform Guideline

Message from Senior Leadership Team:

Dear Parents and Carers,

Ahead of the new term, we are writing to outline expectations for uniform for both the school day and for PE lessons.

Last term, we noticed an increase in children wearing sports-clothing instead of our school uniform. Whilst it was an unseasonably hot summer term, we remind parents that children are expected to attend school in full school uniform. The uniform is outlined on our school website, under the ‘parents’ section subpage.

Uniform is expensive, and we encourage all of our families to utilise the supermarket alternative offers around jumpers, cardigans, polo shirts, skirts, trousers and black shoes. A reminder that our uniform doesn’t include jogger bottoms, hoodies or leggings.

We do not require a branded jumper bearing our school’s logo. A jumper or cardigan in the school’s colour is perfectly acceptable, also available at many supermarkets.

The PE kit consists of a plain white t-shirt and PE shorts instead of cycling or branded shorts. We ask for loose-style pumps for PE to help with completing activities in the sports hall as well as outside. We do not want children wearing branded apparel, which is not only costly for families, but doesn’t support your child with balance in the curriculum for topics such as dance or gymnastics.

Class teachers will monitor uniform in the first few weeks of term. Where we are seeing a child not in a uniform, our first port-of-call will be to contact you to see what we can do to help you ensure your child has the correct clothing.

From September, all classes will keep an appropriately sized full uniform for those that need it. This may be because of a discretionary accident, mud/water from outside or those frequently not attending in school uniform. This will include black shoes for those attending in trainers.

Full uniform will be required from Monday 8 September.

At St. Mary's we like our children to wear school uniform. Jumpers and Cardigans are the only branded uniform item - they are available from Skoolkit. Please see the link below:

Non-logo uniform

As a school, we are dedicated to supporting our families as much as we can. We understand that uniforms can be expensive and therefore it is not compulsory for your child to have a logo cardigan or sweatshirt. You can purchase blue sweatshirts and cardigans from most supermarkets (Asda, Tesco etc) which are fully acceptable.

Pupil Premium

We will also continue to support our Pupil Premium children with 50% off RRP their first sweatshirt or cardigan at the start of the academic year (September).

Bookbags and Rucksacks

Children starting Year R in September will be provided with a free bookbag.

Children starting Year 4 in September will be provided with a free rucksack.

After this, these items can be bought from the school office:

Bookbag - £6.95

Rucksack - £7.50

Our uniform is royal blue, grey and white as follows:

  • White shirts, t-shirts and blouses
  • Dark grey trousers or shorts
  • Dark grey skirts and pinafore dresses
  • Dark grey tunics
  • Blue and white candy stripe or check summer dresses
  • Royal blue sweatshirts/cardigans
  • Royal blue or white socks/tights
  • Black or brown shoes
  • Hijabs, if worn, should be white, black or royal blue

For P.E

  • White t-shirt
  • Black/Navy shorts or tracksuits bottoms
  • Black/Navy hoodie or tracksuit top
  • Plimsolls or trainers

Jewellery

Children may wear watches but other jewellery is not suitable for school (particularly dangling earrings and necklaces)

Children with pierced ears may wear plain gold studs, but not sleepers or pendant earrings.  County Inspectors also advise that all jewellery should be removed for P.E.  It would therefore be very helpful if pupils who wear stud earrings do not wear them on days when they have P.E.  If your child wears jewellery for religious reasons please let the Headteacher know in writing. All jewellery, however, will need to be removed, taped over with micropore or covered with a sweatband during P.E.

School staff accept no responsibility for the safe keeping of watches or jewellery.

Expected standard of dress

We ask parents not to send their children to school wearing:

  • Jeans
  • Unsuitable shoes or trainers
  • Clothes with slogans or pictures of pop stars etc. printed on them
  • Sportswear e.g. football or cycle shorts, shell suits or track suits
  • Make-up, nail varnish or excessive amount of hair gel
